BALKTOBERFEST 2009!
October 3, 2009 Silver
Spring, MD
World
Music Folklife Center hosts their 3rd annual Balktoberfest, a festival celebrating Balkan and European
culture with live music all night long, delicious Balkan mezze and grilled
foods for sale, beer & soft drinks, and open dancing. Sample delicious
Balkan food while being serenaded by wandering musicians in the outdoor tent, then join us inside to shop the Balkan Bazaar for
traditional music, crafts and clothing, listen to live music and dance all
night long.
The only
event of it's kind in the DC metro area, Balktoberfest
is an alternative to other "Oktoberfest" events. With an emphasis on
celebrating Balkan culture, music and dance, this fun, family friendly event,
offers an inexpensive evening of good food, great music and open dancing.
This year's event features a special performance by internationally known and
4-time invited guest to the Dragachevo
Brass Festival in Gucha, Serbia, Zlatne
Uste - one of the foremost presenters of Balkan dance music in the
United States.
A
portion of proceeds from the festival go towards World Music Folklife
Center programs and Search for Common Ground (SFCG), a DC based
nonprofit who's mission is to transform the way the
world deals with conflict. For more info on SFCG, check out www.sfcg.org
Afternoon
activities (between 4pm-6pm) are free. Evening admission, beginning at 6pm is
just $25 for adults, $20 for seniors and students with valid ID, and kids under
18 are free! Cash only at door!
