In cooperation with The Society of Cincinnati, WIPAC proudly
presents pianist Jelena Vladikovic. She
was born to a family of musicians in Belgrade,
Serbia, and
grew up with music. Her grandfather and uncle were violinists and her mother
was a piano teacher. When the Yugoslav Music Teachers Association brought Evgeni Timakin from State Music
School in Moscow to Belgrade, she was chosen as one of eight students for his
Master Class, and there began her pianistic journey. She studied with Timakin until she graduated from secondary music school and
was awarded a full scholarship to study in Moscow. As the foreign student quota in Moscow was full, she was sent to Leningrad instead, where she studied with Pavel Serebryakov Ms. Vladikovic received the highest rating from 11 members of
the jury at the most prestigious Yugoslav competition for young musicians and
was the first recipient of a Special Award at age 13. By 17, she was a
substitute piano teacher at a secondary music school. After receiving a
Bachelor’s degree in piano performance, she was invited to teach at the University of Novi Sad,
Academy of Arts. In 1982, she immigrated to Vancouver, Canada
and continued Master of Music studies at the University of British
Columbia. In 2002 she came to the US with her
son, who was invited to train with the Phoenix Swim Club. In the fall of 2006,
she became involved with the Young Artist Committee and the USASU Bosendorfer/Schimmel International Piano Competition as a
PR and Media Relations volunteer, an involvement that led to her return to
piano and first public appearance in February 2007 since her retirement from
performing in 1989. She joined the ranks of First Prize Winners in the 2007
Washington International Piano Artists Competition, making her the first woman
to win this prestigious award. Jelena Vladikovic is currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts
degree in piano performance and pedagogy at Arizona State University School
of Music, under the direction of Dr. Baruch Meir.
