I brought my camera to the beach. I
took pictures of the blooming cactus in my yard. The flamboyant leaves looked
interesting against the clear sky... But, these beautiful details are common on
Vieques. I wanted a deeper sight.
Using digital manipulation, I am
braking and changing these familiar pictures, erasing their original forms. I
used their shapes, colors and lines to build new images. They are abstract yet
still preserve their previous organic form. Looking at them now I see my grandmother’s
“kilim” designs, Japanese graphics that I adore, and the entire island that I
call home. Images that surprise me with contrast they provide to my past works,
witch were sharp pieces created in a bustling city.
This way, I wanted to capture that
glimpse, that place, which makes me remember how beautiful and peaceful living
in the moment is.
